The Government of Dubai continues to develop and enhance its vital infrastructure and launch more quality projects that meet the emirate's current and future needs and support the unremitting efforts made in the field of sustainable development, in accordance with the highest standards and international best practices, and using the latest technological solutions to embody the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, aiming to make Dubai one of the most sustainable cities in the world.

Daoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality, stressed that the Dubai Waste Treatment Center highlights Dubai's efforts in employing the latest solutions and technologies to ensure the safety of the environment, ensure its sustainability and preserve it for future generations, and constitutes a fundamental pillar within Dubai's vision to become the most sustainable city in the world, as it provides an alternative solution. sustainable and safe waste disposal, and a source of clean energy.

He pointed out that work on the completion of the center is progressing in full swing according to the schedule specified for the huge project, where the completion rate in its construction works is approximately 85%, noting

Until the completion of its last phase will be during the year 2024.

He stressed that the center reflects Dubai's pioneering efforts in employing the latest solutions and technologies to enhance sustainability and protect the environment, by recycling waste and converting it into products that can be used in a practical embodiment of the circular economy model, in line with the national goals in the energy sector.

Al Hajri said: “Dubai has always sought to be a pioneer in the field of waste-to-energy in order to reduce the amount of solid waste, provide alternative sources for generating clean energy, and develop a sustainable and environmentally friendly system in the field of waste management at the emirate level.

This project is considered the largest in terms of operational capacity, as it will treat approximately 1.9 million tons of waste annually to convert it into renewable energy, generating electrical energy equivalent to the needs of more than 135,000 housing units.

The giant "Dubai Waste Treatment Center" project is one of the most important infrastructure projects that serve to preserve the environment by increasing dependence on clean and renewable energy options in Dubai.

It comes within the qualitative projects that Dubai Municipality is currently implementing and is part of the emirate's ambitious efforts in the field of environmental sustainability. Waste in a safe manner that takes into account the highest health and environmental standards in the world.

According to the general plan of the project, upon completion of its stages, the center will treat about 5,666 tons of municipal solid waste, which the emirate produces daily, and it is scheduled that renewable energy resulting from waste treatment will feed the local electricity network with about 215 megawatt hours of clean energy, which means that It will treat 45% of the current municipal waste volume in the emirate, while the initial operation of the center will begin in early 2023, with an operating capacity of 40% of its total capacity, through the start-up of two out of five incineration lines. At this stage, about 2,000 tons of waste will be received. Solid waste and the production of approximately 80 megawatt-hours of renewable energy.

The Director General of Dubai Municipality indicated that the installation of the electric generator and the steam turbine engine resulting from the waste treatment process has been completed in the center, which has a total area of 400,000 square meters, as the center is expected to produce annual energy that meets the needs of more than 135,000 homes. , with the adoption of the latest Japanese and Swiss technologies, to complete the processing operations.

Al-Hajri pointed to the responsibility placed on the residents of the emirate, through their commitment to the environment, and their role in preserving it, especially with regard to rationalizing waste production, which goes through multiple and costly stages, in the transportation journey from residential buildings to landfill and treatment plants, noting the value of the project. In creating a new reality for dealing with waste, with the importance of the participation of all members of society by changing the way they deal with waste and reducing its production, with the aim of contributing to protecting the environment, reducing carbon emissions, and transforming Dubai into the most sustainable city in the world.

All emissions will be safely treated in the "Dubai Waste Treatment Center" using a fabric filter, consisting of 12,480 filter bags, before discharging through a 70-meter-high chimney, taking all necessary measures to get rid of any odors resulting from the treatment processes.

The waste treatment capacity is about 1.912 million tons annually, and the project mechanism includes collecting waste by trucks and transporting it to the Dubai Waste Treatment Center, where 1,000 trucks will be received per day, which will enable the center to accommodate 88 trucks per hour.

The center includes five incineration lines, to ensure the burning of 5,666 tons of waste per day, and the incinerated waste will produce 1,000 tons of bottom ash, which will be recycled and used in infrastructure projects.

An electronic platform was launched to exchange recyclable and reusable materials, with the aim of reducing the quantities of waste produced and raising the percentage of waste diverted from the landfill.

Dubai Municipality aims to provide a sustainable environment for the residents and visitors of the emirate in accordance with the highest international standards, as it has developed an integrated strategic plan for solid waste management in the Emirate of Dubai during the next two decades. Residential complexes, construction and demolition sites, the hospitality sector, commercial centers, commercial and institutional buildings, in addition to industrial facilities.

The Waste Treatment Center serves to enhance Dubai's contribution to achieving the United Nations sustainable development goals, as it helps achieve the plans set by Dubai Municipality in order to reduce the amount of solid waste transferred to landfills, develop alternative sources of energy generation, as well as contribute to the establishment of a sustainable and friendly system. environment, in the field of waste management at the level of the Emirate.

• The project generates electrical energy that meets the needs of more than 135 thousand housing units, and its final phase will be completed in 2024.

• Renewable energy resulting from waste treatment feeds the local electricity network with about 215 megawatt hours of clean energy.

Daoud Al-Hajri:

• «The new center is the largest in the world in terms of operational capacity, with a capacity to treat 1.9 million tons of waste annually to produce renewable energy».

A sustainable and environmentally friendly system

The "Dubai Waste Treatment Center" project translates the commitment of Dubai Municipality to establish a sustainable and environmentally friendly system in the field of waste management at the emirate level in support of achieving the goals included in the "Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050", launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President The State, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to transform the emirate into a global center for clean energy and green economy, consolidating Dubai’s contributions among international efforts that lead the sustainability process globally, while the center also supports the UAE’s directions to reduce emissions and the goals of the “Climate Neutrality Strategic Initiative 2050”, and is in line with With the new 50 principles of sustainable development and ensuring the prosperity of societies.
