South Africa: Dlamini-Zuma confirms his interest in the presidency of the ANC

President Cyril Ramaphosa already knows who he will have to face to stay at the head of the ANC.

The African National Congress will meet in mid-December to conduct its internal elections, and in the press, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma confirms that she is interested in the post, as in 2017. Whoever will be elected president of the ruling party since 1994, will then have a good chance of becoming the next South African head of state.

Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma is not yet officially in the running, she has simply agreed to respond positively to the appeal of certain local ANC delegations, according to her spokesperson quoted by the

Sunday Times

.

She will then have to obtain wider support from the delegates who constitute the base of the ANC in order to be able to present herself.

Nevertheless, she is the first candidate to assert herself against President Ramaphosa.

Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma is however part of his government, she is Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.

She is a pillar of the party, coupled with a continental figure since she chaired the African Union Commission, 

between 2012 and 2017

Other ministers or former ministers of Cyril Ramaphosa should soon come out of the woodwork and announce their intentions.

The process of nominating candidates for the new leadership of the African National Congress is due to begin this week.
