Ukraine announced the penetration of Russian defenses and the restoration of lands in various regions. On the other hand, Moscow stressed that the weapons provided by Western countries to Kiev stop their impact when the war is prolonged, and may delay defeat, but will not achieve victory.

Yesterday evening, Thursday, the Ukrainian army said that it had penetrated Russian defenses and regained territory in several areas, most notably a city in the east.

At a time when the Ukrainian forces launched a large-scale counterattack since last week, especially to retake the Kherson region in the south of the country, the General Staff announced a series of successes on several fronts across Ukraine.

The biggest progress was made in the Kharkiv border region with Russia in the northeast of the country, where Ukrainian forces assert that they have penetrated Russian defenses at a depth of 50 kilometers and have recaptured more than 20 towns from Russian forces.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed Thursday evening that his forces had regained control of the city of Balaklya in the Kharkiv region (east) from Russian forces.

Things are as they should be

"Things are as they should be. The Ukrainian flag is flying over a liberated city, under the skies of Ukraine," Zelensky said.

He attached his message with a video clip showing Ukrainian soldiers marching in this city, which has a population of 27 thousand people, and was occupied by the Russian army in the beginning of March.

In the south, the officer in command of the Ukrainian General Staff Oleksiy Gromov confirmed that "in some directions" the army "made a deep penetration into the enemy's defenses (within an area ranging) from two kilometers to tens of kilometers."

"A number of towns have been liberated," he added.

In the Donbass, Ukrainian soldiers took control of between two and three kilometers in the vicinity of the cities of Kramatorsk and Slovyansk, which are still under Ukrainian control, and recaptured from the Russians the town of Uzern, according to Gromov.

It was not possible for an independent source to verify these military achievements, which are the largest for Ukraine since the withdrawal of Russian forces from the Kyiv region in late March.

A proxy war

For its part, Russia warned of the continuation of the war in Ukraine due to Western arms supplies to Kyiv.

This came in a session held by the UN Security Council, Thursday evening, at the request of Moscow, to discuss arms supplies to Ukraine.

"Our Western colleagues, since the start of the special military operation in Ukraine, waged the largest proxy war in history against Russia, and decided to fight to the last Ukrainian soldier," said Russia's permanent representative to the council, Vassily Nebizia.

"The United States and its allies spent about $20 billion on military support for Ukraine in the last months of this year alone, and the Biden administration is planning to request another $20 billion in emergency funding for the first quarter of 2023," he added.

prolonging suffering

The Russian delegate to the Security Council stressed that these weapons will not make a difference on the battlefield, but will only be able to prolong the suffering of the Zelensky regime, delay its “disturbing” end, and also prolong the suffering of the Ukrainian people.

He also said that the leaders of Western countries are working to turn Ukraine into a global hub for illicit arms supplies, which could soon be used by "terrorists" in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, as he put it.

Nebizia added that arms companies in the United States and Britain are making amazing profits.

In response to these accusations, Deputy US Ambassador to the UN Richard Mills said his country and Britain, along with more than 50 countries, are proud to provide vital security assistance to support Ukraine in defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of Russian aggression.

It is noteworthy that the defense ministers of a group of countries met yesterday in Germany to discuss continuing military support to Ukraine.

On the sidelines of this meeting, the United States announced the provision of new weapons to Ukraine worth more than 600 million dollars.
