A man accused of rape and then cleared several times decided to claim damages from the complainant, before the criminal court of Grenoble (Isère), reports Le Dauphiné Libéré.

He thus requests 30,000 euros for moral damage and 5,200 euros for material damage.

His ex-girlfriend had filed a complaint for rape, harassment and theft in 2016, for acts allegedly committed between 1997 and 2000.

After investigation, the case was closed without follow-up, for lack of evidence.

But in 2017, the complainant had again taken legal action by filing a civil action with the dean of the investigating judges of Grenoble.

A procedure that resulted in an indictment and then a dismissal order.

A dismissal also contested by the young woman and then confirmed again in 2021.

No criminal sanction

After all these years of proceedings deemed abusive by the respondent, he decided to claim civil compensation, but no criminal sanction.

During a hearing before the criminal court, the public prosecutor of Grenoble, Éric Vaillant, requested a rejection of this request.

The verdict will be delivered on September 20.
