Let the Germans be reassured: they will have heating this winter.

Gas storage levels "are above 85%, which is significantly higher than at the same time last year", underlined Chancellor Olaf Scholz, praising the gas agreements concluded with France, the Netherlands Bas and Belgium, in front of the Bundestag.

"We are in a situation where we can say that we are going to get through this winter despite all the tensions, with the preparations that we have made, which no one could have guaranteed three, four, five months ago", reassures- he.

"We are now in a position to approach this winter with courage and bravery and to ensure that our country comes out of it," chained the former mayor of Hamburg.

He also said he was "convinced that Germany is able to embark on the path of the future", claiming to have taken "far-reaching decisions, more important than those taken in recent decades".

These decisions are bearing fruit, he assured, citing in particular the multiple projects for import terminals of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Angela Merkel's balance sheet harshly criticized

In an offensive tone, the Chancellor criticized the energy policy of the CDU-CSU conservatives and Angela Merkel, which is too dependent on gas imported from Russia.

The conservative union, in power between 2005 and 2021, is "fully responsible for the fact that Germany took decisions to exit coal and nuclear without ever having had the strength to commit to anything" nor to initiate "the development of renewable energies".

“They fought defensive battles against every wind turbine and every defensive battle in recent years harms Germany,” lambasted Olaf Scholz, former finance minister and vice-chancellor of Angela Merkel's last coalition government.

"It is a good thing that you are in opposition so that we can modernize the industry, so that we remain competitive and that we no longer shirk the problems of this country", launched the Chancellor to the President of the CDU, Friedrich Merz.
