The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, praised the efforts made by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), which is hosted in the United Arab Emirates, stressing the importance of supporting the capabilities of Arab countries in the field of energy transition to clean sources to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement on reducing climate change. The Arab region has promising potential in this regard.

This came when he received, today at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the University, the Director General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Francisco Lacamera.

The official spokesman for the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Counselor Gamal Rushdie, stated that the meeting also dealt with a number of issues of common interest, including the ongoing preparations to participate in the Climate Summit, which will be hosted by the Arab Republic of Egypt next November in Sharm El-Sheikh, and building the capacities of Arab countries in the field of climate change. The gradual shift to renewable energy sources, in addition to the files of joint cooperation to support Arab integration in the field of energy.

The Spokesman concluded his statement by saying that Aboul Gheit agreed, during his meeting with Mr. Lacamera, to sign a memorandum of joint cooperation on the sidelines of the Climate Summit (COP27), which establishes the establishment of close cooperation between the two organizations in the fields related to energy.
