This morning (September 7), the Haitai Yangtze River Tunnel, known as the "First Tunnel of the Yangtze River in Wanli", officially started construction.

According to the "Layout Plan of the Yangtze River Trunk Line Crossing the River Channel (2020-2035)" issued by the National Development and Reform Commission, the Haijiang River Crossing Channel is the key road-rail composite river crossing channel to be built before 2025.

The Haitai Yangtze River Tunnel (the part of the Haitai River Tunnel) starts from the Haimen section of the Shanghai-Shaanxi Expressway in Nantong, Jiangsu, passes through Taicang, Suzhou, and ends at the Suzhou-Changshu section of the Shanghai-Wuhan Expressway.

The total length is about 39.07 kilometers, of which the river crossing tunnel is about 11.2 kilometers long. It is currently the world's longest and the largest domestic highway underwater shield tunnel.

The planned construction period is 6 years and is expected to be completed in 2028.

After the completion of the channel, it is of great significance to implement the national strategy for the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta region and the development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, optimize the layout of the Yangtze River Trunk Crossing Channel, and promote the integrated development of the Yangtze River.
