Today, Tuesday, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, reiterated the need to hold accountable those responsible for the assassination of Al-Jazeera correspondent in Palestine, Sherine Abu Aqila, while Washington pledged to continue pressure on Israel regarding the rules of engagement after the killing of Abu Aqila.

Spokesman for the Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, said in a press conference, commenting on the outcome of the Israeli investigation in this regard, that the Secretary-General continues to demand that those responsible for the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh be held accountable, and that Guterres was informed of the announced results in this regard, and he continues to call for the need to hold accountable Responsible for the killing of Shireen Abu Aqleh.

He added that the Secretary-General stresses once again that journalists must never be the target of violence, and must be able to carry out their work freely without fear of harassment and intimidation, and of course without fear of being killed.

Yesterday, Monday, the Israeli army suggested that the Palestinian-American journalist was killed by wrong fire from one of its soldiers, claiming that there was no need for a criminal investigation, amid Palestinian demands for an international investigation.

In the same context, the White House spokeswoman stressed the importance of accountability in the case of the killing of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Aqleh.

The State Department said that Washington will continue to pressure Israel to review its practices regarding rules of engagement after the killing of Shireen Abu Aqleh.

In turn, Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen said that the results of the Israeli army's investigation into the killing of Abu Aqila confirm the importance of conducting an independent investigation, pointing to independent investigations into the killing of Abu Aqila, which confirmed the absence of fire from Palestinian gunmen.

It is noteworthy that Al-Jazeera correspondent Shireen Abu Aqila was killed on May 11, 2022, and the Palestinian Ministry of Health said at the time that she was shot in the head by the Israeli army while covering its storming of the city of Jenin in the northern West Bank, and several investigations, including an investigation by Al-Jazeera, confirmed that she was killed by Israeli fire.
