Guterres urges Russia and Ukraine to disarm over Zaporizhia nuclear plant

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday urged Russia and Ukraine to agree on a demilitarized perimeter around the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant.

"As a first step, Russian and Ukrainian forces must commit not to engage in any military activity towards the station site or from the station site," Guterres told the United Nations Security Council.

"In a second step, an agreement should be concluded on a demilitarized perimeter. This includes in particular the obligation of Russian forces to withdraw all soldiers and military equipment from that perimeter and a commitment by Ukrainian forces not to enter it," he added.

Earlier in the day, the International Atomic Energy Agency called for the establishment of a security zone around Europe's largest nuclear power plant, saying its experts had found extensive damage to the plant on the battlefront of the war.
