Mikati: The powers of the Lebanese president will be transferred to the government in the event of a presidential vacancy

Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati said, this evening, Monday, that the powers of the President of the Republic will be transferred to the government in the event of a vacancy in the position of the Presidency of the Republic, if a new president is not elected within the specified period, even if it is a caretaker government.

President Mikati's statements came after his meeting with the head of the Progressive Socialist Party, Walid Jumblatt, this evening in Beirut.

In response to a question about the presidential vacuum and the role of the caretaker government, Mikati said, "There is no such thing as a presidential vacuum, but rather a vacancy. The constitution is clear on this issue, and this government transfers the powers of the president to it in the event of any presidential vacancy."

Mikati referred to a previous statement by Walid Jumblatt, in which he said, "This government, in the event of a presidential vacancy, will transfer to it the powers of the President of the Republic."

It is noteworthy that the constitutional deadline for electing a new president of the republic began at the beginning of this month, two months before the end of the mandate of President Michel Aoun, who was elected on October 31, 2016 for a 6-year term.

According to the Lebanese constitution, the House of Representatives meets at the invitation of its president to elect the new president at least one month or two months before the end of the president’s term of office. .

If a President of the Republic is not elected within the specified period, the position of the Presidency of the Republic becomes vacant and the powers of the President of the Republic will be transferred to the Government.
