Matteo Berrettini qualified for the quarter-finals of the US Open, beating in five sets the Spanish Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina, 39 Atp, with a score of 3-6, 7-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

The Roman tennis player confirms his extraordinary continuity in the Grand Slam trials, winning the quarterfinals for the fifth time in his career and for the third time in New York.

It's a champion's victory, more in terms of head and character than legs.

The Spaniard lacked a bit of personality in managing the moments of a match that fluctuated continuously, without linearity and without a master.

"I'm really proud because I didn't start the game as I wanted, I was behind a set and a break, but I was able to fight thanks to my team who continued to encourage me and gave me energy. He played very well, I was a little tired. I'm sorry for his injury in the final, but I'll take the win. "

These are the comments of Matteo Berrettini after the victory against the Spaniard Davidovich Fokina who gave the Roman tennis player the qualification in the quarter-finals of the US Open.

"I trained well for this tournament, I knew I was ready and the work paid off," he added.

Berrettini, who had not won an outdoor hardcourt game since the Indian Wells Masters 1000 in March prior to the US Open, has lost one set in each of the last three rounds.

But at a distance he asserted completeness and experience against the Spaniard, a bit too humoral, who took his 21st defeat in 26 games against an opponent among the top 15 in the world.

Now the Roman is aiming for the second semifinal in New York after the historic one, his first in a Grand Slam, in 2019. He will face the Norwegian Casper Ruud, who is still in the running to climb to number 1 in the ATP ranking at the end of the tournament. or the French left-handed Corentin Moutet.

"I've trained well, I know I'm ready," added Berrettin
