A good year ago, the then Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) set up the Expert Group on Political Islamism.

He justified it by saying that resolute action must be taken against any ideology that goes against the values and norms of our free-democratic basic order.

Given Germany's experience of Islamist terrorism and the milieus that have emerged in many cities whose members reject our core values, the establishment of the circle was a step in the right direction in our efforts to combat extremism and terrorism.

Sweep under the carpet

Now the group of experts is no longer to continue its work.

According to the report by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the danger from Islamist terrorism in Germany continues unabated.

But the Interior Ministry no longer has a CSU man, but an SPD woman.

And Nancy Faeser has dedicated herself above all to fighting right-wing extremism.

Without a doubt, right-wing extremism is the greatest threat to our democracy.

However, this must not lead to other dangers no longer being adequately considered.

As early as June, the Islam researcher Susanne Schröter, who belongs to the group of experts, accused the traffic light coalition of sweeping the problem of Islamism under the carpet.

The current decision proves her right.
