18 killed in attack on mosque in western Afghanistan

  Xinhua News Agency, Kabul, September 2 (Reporter Zou Xuemian) Afghan officials said on the 2nd that an explosion attacked a mosque in the Herat province of western Afghan that day, killing at least 18 people and injuring 23 others.

  Herat provincial government spokesman Hamidullah Matwakir told reporters that the mosque was attacked in Herat, the capital of the province, and a well-known religious scholar was among the dead.

Herat provincial police said it was a suicide bomb attack.

At the time of the incident, religious activities were being prepared in the mosque.

  So far, no individual or group has claimed to have carried out the attack.

  Recently, explosions have occurred frequently in various parts of Afghanistan, causing a large number of casualties.

Among them, the extremist group "Islamic State" claimed to have created several bombings targeting schools, mosques and buses.
