The inspiration comes from the 300th anniversary of Sala when King Gustaf V was invited and entered the long carpet of the time.

The carpet from that occasion was included in the start-up meeting to provide inspiration.

Elvira Matz is the project manager for the 400th anniversary in Sala, who, among other things, intends to celebrate it by weaving the world's longest handwoven carpet.

When the carpet is finished, it will be rolled out in Sala inner city in June 2024 and hopefully stepped on by King Carl XVI Gustaf then.

The start-up meeting in Möklintagården attracted around twenty interested people and they started planning the practical aspects of weaving the carpet.

But how do you manage to weave 800 meters of carpet in practical terms?

- Well, they will weave 5 meters each and tie the parts together into a cohesive carpet.

I reckon 160 carpets will be needed then, says Elvira Matz.

Which carpet holds the world record for a hand-woven carpet today is a bit unclear, but in 2010 Hemtex wrote that it had woven a 797 meter long carpet that was created from old textiles and rolled out on Södermalm.

If the record carpet in Sala is 800 meters, it will be made so that the King and any other royals will walk on it from the railway station to the city center and try to get the record officially in the Guinness Book of Records.
