The body that manages football in Europe, and which has introduced the criterion of financial sustainability since 2009, has sanctioned eight clubs, four of which are Italian, for failing to comply with the balanced budget requirement.

The four Italians are the two Milanese, Juventus and Roma, the others are Marseille, Paris Saint-Germain, Besiktas and Monaco.

The analysis concerns the years from 2018 to 2022, with exceptions for the years 2020 and 2021, subject to the emergency measures linked to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"The eight clubs have accepted a financial contribution of 172 million euros - said UEFA - These amounts will be deducted from any revenue that these clubs earn from participating in Uefa club competitions or paid directly. Of this amount, 26 million. euros will be paid in full, while the remaining balance of 146 million euros "will be paid only in the event of non-compliance by these clubs with the" objectives indicated in the respective settlement agreement ".

In detail, the agreement signed by Roma and Inter provides for compliance with the "stability requirements, as defined in the UEFA regulations", within four years with the further restriction of the squad for European competitions in the event of non-compliance with the commitments.

Juventus and Milan have instead agreed to respect the financial rules within three years and will have no restrictions on the squad.

"The decision of the Uefa Club Financial Control Body testifies to the validity of the strategic vision that guides the work of our club", underlined Milan.

"We will continue with confidence on the virtuous path towards financial sustainability, in line with the indications of financial fair play: a goal that the whole world of football should continue to pursue", concludes the Rossoneri club.

Now the Serie A clubs will have to pay the minimum penalties.

Milan will pay out 2 million, Juventus 3.5, Inter 4 and Roma 5.

No sanctions have been imposed on Lazio and Napoli but the two clubs will be "monitored" as well as, among others, Barcelona and Chelsea.
