"The new restrictions apply to high-end models of chips known as graphics processing units, or GPUs, sold by Silicon Valley companies Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices," The New York Times reported.

According to the publication, over the past decades, these technologies have been used in the most powerful supercomputers used by scientists and Internet companies.

Now US authorities require export licenses for the sale of such goods, as they "may be used or diverted for military purposes" to China or Russia.

"Restrictions are part of the cold war between China and the United States for supremacy in advanced technology," the article claims.

Earlier it was reported that the Taiwanese authorities banned the supply of high-tech goods to Russia and Belarus, in particular, certain types of chips and microprocessors.
