From around 1,000 Russian visa applications daily, Finland now expects that around 100 visas a day will be approved throughout the country.

The change comes into effect on September 1, and Russian citizens will then only be able to apply for a tourist visa once a week and then only at four locations in Finland.

- This only concerns tourist visas.

Visas that apply to studies or work or to visit family and friends will be issued as normal, says Liselott Lindström, SVT's correspondent in Finland.

On Wednesday, it was announced that the EU is freezing the visa agreement that exists with Russia.

The measure will mean that it will be much more difficult for Russians to apply for tourist visas in Europe.

The Union is divided on the issue and there was therefore no total ban as some countries want to see.

Finland has chosen to go a step further and introduced its own restrictions even before the EU's decision.

- Russians use Finland as a way to get out into Europe.

This is something that we hope other countries will take seriously so that Finland is not used as a gateway, says Lindström.
