The water facility in the new Slussen will consist of two so-called unloading channels and a lock channel for boats.

It is the discharge canals that regulate Mälaren's water level by releasing water into the Salt Lake, thereby reducing the risk of flooding in, among other things, the subway, but also in the entire Mälar valley.

The new Victoria Lock, which was inaugurated by its namesake, the Crown Princess, will be able to release 1,400 cubic meters of water per second when it is finished.

The previous locks' capacity was 300 cubic meters per second.

This is what it's supposed to look like when it's done.

The two "basins" are what are called unloading channels, and between them lies the lock channel where boats will be able to lock between Lake Mälaren and the Salt Lake.

During Wednesday, Crown Princess Victoria opened the hatch to one of the discharge channels.

The second is not yet ready.

The lock canal for boats is expected to open in 2025. Then 16,000 boats will be able to lock there every year.
