War in Ukraine Broken dreams under Russian bombs
The Ukrainian offensive has resulted in shootings in the streets of several neighborhoods in the center of the city of
Kherson
, currently occupied by Russia.
It is unclear whether they are Ukrainian troops or local partisans.
The fighting around Kherson, which had a population of 280,000 before Russia's attack, coincides with the
start of a major Ukrainian counteroffensive
to recapture areas in the south held by the Russians, who crossed Ukrainian borders in the south in February with relative ease.
Now the clashes are taking place in "almost the entire region", sources from the Ukrainian presidency announced on Tuesday.
Ukraine's president,
Volodymyr Zelensky
, has urged Russian troops to flee for their lives.
Russia
claims to have made the counteroffensive fail.
But several media reports of smoke on the outskirts of the city of Kherson, and images from social networks confirm it.
The Russians are using their air defenses, says the TASS agency, which reports several houses damaged.

The Russian command has assured that it is killing the Ukrainians who attack them in Kherson and that everything is under control.
"No one is going to liberate the Kherson region, nor the city of Kherson
," said Kirill Stremousov, deputy director of the pro-Russian administration imposed on this Ukrainian city.
Stremousov earlier said the region was not threatened by kyiv's counteroffensive due to "several lines of defence".
"Ukraine is taking back what is its own,"
President Zelensky has said.
"We will take back the Kharkov, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia, Kherson, Crimea regions; we will take back our entire coastal zone. This is what is going to happen. These regions are ours."
The Ukrainian authorities have reported
two dead and 24 wounded after the Russian attacks on the city of Mikolaiv
, located to the west and that the Russians have failed to occupy.
On Monday night, after a shelling, the town of Novaya Kajovka was left without electricity and water.
This Tuesday morning, two residential buildings have been damaged during another bombardment.
Also the Antonovsky Bridge, which crosses the Dnieper, has been bombed, but, according to TASS, the infrastructure has not been damaged.
