To the north of the West Bank, the governorates of Salfit, Qalqilya, and Nablus are witnessing an escalation of demolitions of homes and residential facilities. Over the past few days, their villages and towns have faced the destruction of inhabited homes, which are under construction, under the pretext that they are located in Area C, according to the classification of the Oslo Agreement.

The occupation claims that 62% of the total area of the West Bank, which amounts to (5,800) square kilometers, falls within Area C, and as a result, from the beginning of 2021 until last June, Israel demolished more than (1,350) Palestinian homes and facilities inside the West Bank and the city of Jerusalem. Sharif, while in the same period, more than 1,050 houses were notified to stop construction, half of which were subjected to actual demolition.

The escalation of demolitions of homes and residential facilities in the West Bank comes in light of the occupation restricting the Palestinian population by a recent military order, which grants the Palestinian in Area C the right to object to the Israeli courts, within a maximum period of 96 hours, and after its expiry, the house is demolished in front of an eye. Its original owner, after his inability to prepare his legal papers and objection within this short period.

sudden demolition

In the town of Sebastia, northwest of Nablus, citizens’ homes have witnessed, this August and the past few months, building halt orders, and several demolitions of several homes, under the pretext of building without a permit, and the occurrence of these housing facilities in Area C.

In the dawn hours of the second day of August, while members of the family of the Palestinian Muhammad Abu Al-Saud were in a deep sleep, the Israeli army surrounded his house, to raid it, and expelled them from it under the force of arms, without allowing them to take out only a few of their possessions.

And after (20) minutes of the storming, the huge occupation mechanisms accompanying the armed forces began to demolish the house of Abu Al-Saud in front of the eyes of his six children, who broke down in tears, while they watched the walls of their future dreams scattered irreversibly after only two years of its construction.

On the same day, when the Abu Al-Saud family was deprived of its only shelter, the occupation bulldozers demolished two commercial facilities in the village of Bazaria, north of Nablus, owned by the Palestinian citizen Rabeh Suleiman Seif.

And to talk about the demolition process in the town of Sebastia, its mayor, Muhammad Azem, told "Emirates Today" in an exclusive interview: "Large forces of the occupation soldiers surrounded Abu Al-Saud's house at four o'clock in the morning, and asked its residents to leave in preparation for its demolition, without prior notice warning them to demolish their shelter. The only one, so the family refused to leave it, so the forces began destroying the gate and windows of the house.”

He added, "The heavily armed forces raided Abu Al-Saud's house, and attacked the family of 14 people, including six children, by force of arms, to take them out by force of arms from their house, which they did not own, and their fate became homelessness in the open, just like the residents of Palestinian cities over the course of successive days and years.

The mayor of Sebastia points out that the occupation notified the Abu Al-Saud family to stop construction in their one-story house, about a year ago, so the family went to the Israeli court through legal follow-up, to stop the decision and freeze the demolition order.

Azem continues: “The court delayed Abu Al-Saud, as is the usual practice with all Palestinian residents, and instead of the family receiving the legal response to the petition, the occupation bulldozers received a surprising response while heedless, without prior demolition notification.”

In a related context, the mayor of Sebastia confirms that the town receives daily threats from the Civil Administration of the Israeli army, to demolish the residents' homes, and stop the existing construction and construction work, adding that "more than half of Sebastia's lands are classified (C), and in the event the occupation continues in a policy of The escalation of demolitions, more than 50% of the town’s homes will be removed from the face of the earth.”

Prior permission

Moving to the west of Salfit governorate, adjacent to Nablus, the village of Kafr al-Deek is among the Palestinian areas in the West Bank that are witnessing extensive demolitions, as its residents assert that the homes of their village are subject to an Israeli military decision to demolish without prior court permission.

Among them was the demolition of the Fawzi al-Ahmad family's home, located on the western side of Kafr al-Deek, several days ago this August, after only five days of aerial photography, which is not enough time to issue a court order stopping or freezing the demolition decision.

On the northern side of the village of Kafr Al-Deek, construction inspectors of the Israeli Civil Administration, on Monday morning, the 15th of August, raided the “Khilt Mois” area, so that the occupation bulldozers began a sudden demolition operation, which affected a brick agricultural room and a roof From Al-Zinco, owned by the Palestinian citizen Saleh Omar Qasoul.

Demolition with different arms

Director of the Department of Maps and Geographical Systems at the Orient House Institute for Arab Studies in Jerusalem, Khalil Tafakji, confirms the acceleration of Israeli demolitions of Palestinian homes, within areas classified (C).

He explains that the occupation targets the homes of the indigenous people for demolition and displacement, through various arms within his government, including the Organization and Construction Department, the army and the police, in addition to the Nature Protection Authority.

Tafakji says: “The occupation policy of intensifying demolitions in Area C aims to limit the urban expansion of the Palestinian areas, stifle the population centers inside them, and expand the influence of the boundaries of the master plan of the settlements perched on the lands of Palestinian villages in various areas, just as happened with the settlement of ( Maalem Adumim), which swallows 30 square kilometers of Jerusalem lands, instead of (10) square kilometers.”

• 1,350 Palestinian homes and facilities, inside the West Bank and Jerusalem, were demolished from the beginning of 2021 until June.
