The Executive Director of the Licensing Agency at the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai, Abdullah Yousef Al Ali, revealed that the authority has implemented an experimental system to monitor the safety of trucks by measuring the weight of the load remotely without the need to stop the vehicle while it is on the road.

Al Ali told "Emirates Today" that the truck's axial weight measurement system, which is currently applied in the trial phase, measures the axial weights of vehicles as they are on the road by installing advanced sensors under the road surface, which capture and record the weight applied to each of the vehicle's axes and weight. The total number while the vehicle passes over the measurement site, in addition to a laser camera capable of measuring the dimensions and speed of the vehicles while traveling at the speed of normal traffic, adding that this does not require the vehicle to stop, which makes the measurement process more efficient.

He explained that the main objective of monitoring the weight of trucks is to reduce overloads and the material and human losses they can cause on the roads, as they negatively affect the road networks of bridges and other infrastructure, and cause severe damage to the roads.

Al Ali added that the advanced methods of controlling the load and weights are carried out by monitoring the loads in an electronic and quick way that does not cause any obstruction, congestion or traffic congestion on the roads it monitors, and the warning is often by lighting the signal, which indicates whether the driver has exceeded the legally permissible weight. , in the light of which the truck is stopped for additional scrutiny and necessary action is taken.

He pointed out that there are other systems in place to monitor and inspect the safety of heavy vehicles, including the Vehicle Safety Service System, and the Drone Technology Inspection System, explaining that the Vehicle Safety Service System, in which the number of registered trucks has reached 25,000 since its launch in 2017, is a phrase An optional service through which a smart monitoring device is installed in heavy vehicles registered in Dubai, and allows owners of heavy vehicles and fleet owners to improve their operational processes by tracking the movements of their vehicles and the behavior of drivers.

Al Ali added that the system includes features for tracking vehicles' locations, paths, speed, and operating status, and monitors drivers' wrong behaviors while driving, in addition to the Driver ID feature to identify the driver of the vehicle.

He also referred to the use of drone technology in monitoring and field inspection of heavy vehicles to check the upper side of the vehicle, which is difficult to reach in heavy vehicles normally due to its high altitude.

He explained that the use of technology contributes to ensuring the safety of the staff by avoiding climbing over vehicles to verify violations related to shipping and loading requirements, and to monitor technical defects on the upper side of the vehicle's hull.

It is noteworthy that there is permanent cooperation between the Heavy Vehicles Control Department at the Licensing Agency and the Dubai Police Patrols, to implement periodic and sudden field campaigns, to check the technical specifications of vehicles and tires, which entitles them to impound the vehicle until its conditions are modified, and the driver is given a deadline to deliver the load in case he is a transporter. He is required to immediately go to the detention site and stop his vehicle if it is not loaded.

2000 violations

Statistics issued by the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai, over the past years, showed that the rate of violations against heavy vehicles due to non-compliance with technical standards and tire safety conditions reached 2,000 violations annually, at a time when the number of heavy vehicles registered in the Emirate of Dubai exceeded 45,000 Vehicle according to the latest announced numbers.
