Dubai Police recorded 9,416 violations of pedestrians as a result of wrong crossing from non-designated places, during the first half of this year, warning of the seriousness of this violation, which is a major cause of run-over accidents.

Run-down accidents ranked second in the list of the most common types of traffic fatalities during the first half of this year, with 192 accidents resulting in 12 deaths and 199 injuries, compared to 120 accidents during the same period last year, resulting in 11 deaths and 116 injuries.

Run-over accidents also ranked the same, during the entire past year, with 282 accidents, resulting in 26 deaths and 272 injuries.

The Deputy Director of the General Department of Traffic in Dubai Police, Brigadier Juma bin Suwaidan, told "Emirates Today" that there are two main reasons for run-over accidents, one of which is the lack of appreciation of road users on the part of the drivers, and the other is the wrong crossing on the part of the pedestrians themselves.

He explained that the first cause was behind 175 accidents and caused the death of 10 people and injured 182 others, during the first half, compared to 108 accidents that resulted in 113 injuries and eight deaths during the same period last year.

He stressed that Dubai Police, represented by the General Traffic Department, is doing its utmost to reduce run-over accidents, whether by diversifying the means of control, including techniques and human cadres, or continuous awareness targeting the groups most exposed to these accidents.

He added that the administration recorded, during the first half, 9,416 violations of pedestrians crossing the road outside the places designated for this, pointing out that they could be potential victims in light of the failure to cross from the places designated for pedestrians.

He pointed out that this behavior reflects the culture of certain groups who are most vulnerable to run-over accidents, and they do not realize the importance of safe crossing through the crossings designated for this, so you find someone blocking the road from a place of violation, while there is a pedestrian bridge or crossing meters away from it.

He explained that the biggest problem can be detected on the highway, which has a speed of 120 kilometers per hour and more, as it is practically and theoretically unimaginable for a sane person to cross a road consisting of five lanes on which vehicles are traveling at this speed and imagine that he crosses safely, and it is difficult to blame the driver in this The situation, as no one is expected to cross this way.

He stressed the Dubai Police's keenness to implement its annual campaign "Cross Safely" over the years, targeting the groups most vulnerable to these accidents, in cooperation with strategic partners, such as the Labor Affairs Committee, providing periodic lectures on ways to prevent accidents, especially running over, and the importance of adhering to safe crossing. .

Bin Suwaidan explained that the General Traffic Department is also keen on educating drivers about the necessity of giving priority to pedestrians, respecting the crossings designated for them, in addition to activating mechanisms to control violators.

It is noteworthy that Dubai Police is using the first smart device to monitor pedestrian crossings, and monitor vehicles that are not committed to giving them priority to cross from the areas designated for them.

The device works on solar energy and is equipped with sensors that can recognize the movement of pedestrians crossing on both sides of the road, detect vehicles that violate the law and do not give them priority, and document the violation by video, and is linked to an advanced communication technology to transmit the case directly to the violation handling platform.

According to Dubai Police, the device emits a red light to warn vehicle drivers of the need to stop and give priority to pedestrians passing by.

respect pedestrians

The Deputy Director of the General Department of Traffic in Dubai Police, Brigadier Juma bin Suwaidan, stated that respect for pedestrians must stem from the driver, and it is necessary for everyone to realize that the wrong crossing by the person walking on his foot does not necessarily absolve the driver from responsibility in case The occurrence of run-over, as each accident is planned and analyzed separately, and several aspects are considered, including the attention of the person who was driving the car, his reaction, and whether it is possible to avoid the accident or not.

He pointed out that the violation of road users' lack of appreciation on the part of drivers is a major cause of run-over accidents, according to statistics, as during the past year it resulted in 254 accidents, and resulted in the death of 22 people, in addition to 266 injuries, including 28 severe injuries, 123 moderate injuries, and 93 minor injuries.

He stressed the administration's keenness to study and analyze the causes of accidents periodically to reduce them, pointing to the necessity of driving with caution and respecting pedestrian paths, and taking into account certain areas while driving, in order to avoid run-over accidents.
