The US Department of Justice revealed that it is investigating former US President Donald Trump over taking records from the White House because it believes he illegally kept documents, including intelligence-related information, one of the most important US secrets.

The department issued a heavily redacted affidavit to justify the rare August 8 search of Trump's residence in Florida by the FBI, in which agents seized 11 sets of classified records, including some that were described as "top secret" as possible. It could seriously threaten US national security if disclosed.

In the affidavit, an unidentified FBI agent said the agency reviewed and identified 184 hashtag documents containing information related to national defense after Trump in January returned 15 boxes of government records requested by the US National Archives.

Other records in those boxes, according to the affidavit, had handwritten notes by Trump.

The search was part of an FBI investigation into whether Trump illegally took and kept the documents when he left office in January 2021 after losing the 2020 election to President Joe Biden, and whether Trump tried to obstruct the investigation.

Trump, a Republican who is considering running in the next presidential election in 2024, called the court-authorized search of his home in Mar-a-Lago, Palm Beach, "politically motivated" and again called it a "break-in."

The documents, released with the affidavit, showed that "a large number of civilian witnesses familiar with Trump's actions after he left office aided the investigation, a rare disclosure."

Investigators were particularly concerned about keeping classified documents in an unsecured room that could endanger undercover US intelligence agents.

During the raid, agents searched 58 bedrooms and 33 bathrooms, according to the search warrant, angering supporters of the former president.

Federal Judge Bruce Reinhart had ordered the US Department of Justice to release this essential document, which is supposed to explain in detail the reasons that led to the investigation of Trump.
