Accompanied by several deputies and officials from her department, the German Minister of Foreign Affairs, Annalena Baerbock, will meet in Rabat, this Thursday, August 25, her Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita.

The two countries are now seeking to consolidate their bilateral cooperation in several areas, after the thaw in relations that began at the start of the year.

According to Moroccan sources, bilateral agreements will take place in particular in the field of green energy.

Turning the page on the crisis between the two countries that occurred in March 2021 after Chancellor Olaf Scholz came to power is the ultimate goal of this visit, which aims to relaunch cooperation between the two countries.

The partnership in the energy field will be at the heart of this visit, especially with regard to green hydrogen.

The kingdom could begin production in this area within three years, and plans to export its production.

Berlin gave the first whistle on Wednesday for 14 hydrogen-powered trains and the Germans are seeking supplies for the innovative technology.

As a reminder, Rabat had frozen its relations with Germany, due to "

deep misunderstandings

" with Berlin about Western Sahara.

The Moroccan king announced last week that the Sahara is “

the prism through which Morocco considers its international environment

”.

Relations between Rabat and Berlin therefore calmed down after a letter sent by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to King Mohammed VI.

In this letter, Mr. Steinmeier judges that Rabat's project for the autonomy of Western Sahara is “

a good basis

” which expresses “

the serious efforts

” of the kingdom for a solution to this conflict.
