US Search warrant for Trump reveals he took classified material home
USA Donald Trump, investigated by Justice for stealing state secrets
Former US President
Donald Trump
has filed a lawsuit demanding a court appoint an independent party to examine
files the FBI seized from his
Florida mansion.
Citing the target of a
politically
motivated investigation , Trump has demanded that an "expert" be appointed to review the more than two dozen boxes of files in the
unprecedented
raid on August 8.
The expert, who would not act under the direction of the Justice Department
, would evaluate the documents and determine which of them Trump could retain
as "privileged" or protected from use in investigations.
"The raid, search and seizure at Mar-a-Lago
was illegal and unconstitutional
, and we are taking the necessary steps to get those documents back," Trump said.
"They seized
documents protected
by executive privilege," he added.

Trump's chaotic final days in the White House
The FBI warrant said
Trump was suspected of illegally taking highly classified documents
and official White House recordings that he had no right to have and refused to return.
Aside from the potential
violation of
highly sensitive records laws, the Department said such materials were also
key to other
unspecified ongoing federal investigations.
Proceedings that may implicate the former president
include the wide-ranging investigation into the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on Capitol Hill
by Trump supporters and another investigation into his supporters' efforts to manipulate the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Appointing an expert could potentially
block investigators from accessing the documents
, especially if Trump's thesis that most were privileged documents is accepted.
Additionally, it could interfere if the Justice Department considers
charging Trump with obstructing investigations by
refusing to release these documents.
The complaint was filed not in
federal court
in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where the original order was issued, but in one farther away in Fort Pierce, where the only judge was appointed by
Trump.
Trump
"is the clear favorite in the Republican primary and the 2024 general election, should he decide to run," the suit adds, suggesting the
FBI
raid was politically motivated.
More than 300 documents
Donald Trump accumulated
more than 300 classified documents
in his residence in Mar-a-Lago (Florida),
The New York Times has indicated.
As published by the newspaper, the
US government
has recovered half in the last year and a half, that is, since Trump left the White House in January 2021.
The documents were turned over to the Justice Department by
Trump advisers
in June, and the FBI seized more classified files in the notorious search it carried out this month at the former president's Florida mansion.
Until now, the exact volume of material that US security forces had found in
Trump's home
was unknown .
The contents of the documents Trump took from the White House
have not yet been released
.
The Department of Justice has only made public some fragments of the
search warrant
with which the FBI inspected the former president's mansion.
That order indicates that
Trump
and people close to him could be committing
crimes of obstruction of justice
, destruction of documents and violation of the espionage law.
