The Executive Council of the Emirate of Sharjah, during its meeting yesterday, in the office of His Highness the Ruler, headed by His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Vice Chairman of the Council, issued a decision regarding the use of single-use plastic bags and materials in the Emirate of Sharjah.

In accordance with the decision, starting from January 1, 2024, it is prohibited to trade, produce, offer or import single-use plastic bags and materials in the emirate, provided that they are replaced with multi-use bags and materials, with specifications and technical standards approved by the Department of Municipal Affairs.

The decision aims to protect the environment from the dangers of plastic pollution, reduce the negative effects resulting from harmful practices, and promote and encourage a culture of environmental protection and sustainability by reducing the consumption of single-use plastic bags and materials, leading to their ban, and regulating the shift from the consumption of single-use plastic bags and materials. And work to provide environmentally friendly alternatives, and to ensure the handling of bags and multi-use materials in a sustainable manner.

The Department of Municipal Affairs in the Emirate of Sharjah is responsible for setting the necessary plans and policies to implement the provisions of this decision, identifying single-use plastic bags and materials to be prohibited and the exceptions thereto, and preparing and implementing awareness and educational programs on the importance of shifting from consuming single-use plastic bags and materials to consuming other sustainable alternatives. And multi-use.

To achieve the goals of the decision, sales outlets are committed to imposing a tariff of no less than 25 fils, starting from October 1, on each single-use plastic bag presented to the final consumer, in preparation for the complete ban on single-use plastic bags and materials in the emirate, in addition to reducing the consumption of bags. and single-use plastics and implement initiatives that contribute to achieving this, informing the consumer of the tariff imposed on the consumption of single-use plastic bags and materials, raising awareness of their risks and guiding them to use and provide appropriate alternatives.

During the meeting, the council discussed several governmental issues, dealing with development projects in various sectors, legal legislation, and performance indicators for government departments and bodies.

The Council was briefed on a visual presentation on the project of earth settlements for the areas of the Mahatheb suburb in Sharjah, in which the settlement works for the areas of Al-Qutaynah (1 to 6) were completed, during which more than 30 million square meters were filled and cut, to be ready for the rest of the services works and the start of housing construction.

The presentation also included a set of challenges facing earthworks in various regions, which may cause delays in works, in addition to a set of development recommendations.

The Council commended the efforts of the Public Works Department and the work teams from various parties in completing the earthwork settlements in the Qatina areas (1 to 6), and directed the implementation of a set of recommendations in order to facilitate construction for citizens.
