The jurors recognized the former acting Kaliningrad doctors.

the head physician of the city maternity hospital No. 4 Elena Belaya and the anesthesiologist-resuscitator Elina Sushkevich guilty of killing a baby.

This was reported to RT by Sushkevich's lawyer Kamil Babasov.

He said that the meeting began at 11 am: first there was a debate of the parties, and only at 9 pm the jurors left for the deliberation room.

“The verdict was announced at half past midnight.

The jury voted that they were guilty,” the lawyer said.

- They were asked 4 questions: “Was there a fact of introducing magnesium sulfate?”, “Are Belaya and Sushkevich separately involved in this crime?”, “Are they guilty of this?”, “Do they deserve leniency?”.

The jury found the doctors guilty, complicit, undeserving of leniency.”

According to Babasov, the jurors spent 3 hours and 20 minutes in the deliberation room.

He also noted that the court will set the sentence on August 30.

“Elina took it as…nothing good.

Imprisonment for a term of 8 to 20 years.

We will appeal the verdict.

We really hope that it will succeed, ”the lawyer emphasized in a conversation with RT.

Babasov also said that during the review of the case, no new evidence was considered, but rather “the old material was chewed on.”

In addition, the prosecution reduced the amount of information provided to jurors.

“Only the moment of the murder was discussed.

And the condition of the child and mother, which preceded the death of the child, was not investigated.

Because they believe that this has nothing to do with the charges against them,” says the lawyer.

- At the debate, we assessed the testimony of witnesses.

At the last meeting, the resuscitator-anaesthesiologist, head of the intensive care unit of the 9th maternity hospital of St. Petersburg Gorodetsky Vladislav Albertovich spoke.

On that morning of November 6, he talked with Elina.

She sent him tests, shared her feelings for this child.

He said that, judging by the tests, it was obvious that the child had not been treated before Sushkevich's arrival.

He read out the correspondence, from which it followed that Elina in no case planned to stop the treatment of the child and saved him to the last.

Baby death

Earlier, RT told how in November 2018, a 27-year-old native of Uzbekistan, Zamirahon Akhmedova, entered the maternity hospital No. 4 in the city of Kaliningrad at the 24th week of pregnancy.

The woman reported that her water broke 2 days ago.

Akhmedova gave birth to a premature baby weighing 718 g.

head physician Elena Belaya ordered a premature baby to be given a lethal dose of magnesium sulfate, allegedly because the child would not survive anyway.

After that, she asked the staff to rewrite the medical records, allegedly the baby died in the womb.

On November 15, Elena Belaya was detained and a criminal case was initiated against her under Part 2 of Art.

105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (Murder).

Anesthesiologist-resuscitator Elina Sushkevich - in June 2019.

According to investigators, Belaya was the organizer of the murder, and Sushkevich was the perpetrator.

They were given a measure of restraint in the form of house arrest.

According to the doctors, they did everything possible to save his life.

The newborn was connected to a ventilator and the drug "Kurosurf" was injected.

It is worth noting that initially doctors were accused of “regretting” the drug for the child.

Investigators later stated that the child's death was due to an overdose of a magnesium sulfate drug.

This version appeared after one of the forensic medical examinations.

However, the medical community did not believe in such a conclusion and came to the defense of colleagues.

In December 2020, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty.

According to Elena Belaya's lawyer Timur Marshani, the jurors were asked 7 questions in total.

One of them was formulated as follows: “Is it proven that the child was injected with magnesium sulfate in the amount of 10 ml, as a result of which he died?”

The remaining questions began with the phrase “if the answer to the first question is yes, then…?”.

Marshani explained that the jury considered that the introduction of the drug was not proven and did not answer subsequent questions.

On the basis of the jury's verdict, Belaya and Sushkevich were acquitted by the Kaliningrad Regional Court and recognized their right to rehabilitation.

Doctors returned to work and continued to engage in professional activities.

However, the prosecutor's office appealed the verdict.

In May 2021, the First Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction overturned the acquittal for Kaliningrad doctors.

The case was sent back for retrial.

According to lawyer Timur Marshani, the verdict was overturned because one of the jurors had an expired conviction.

Another juror had a relative on trial.

According to Elina Sushkevich's lawyer Kamil Babasov, after the incident, Zamirahon Akhmedova underwent treatment for a year, after which she was able to become pregnant.

Now she and her husband are raising a healthy child.
