A South Sudanese diplomat accredited to the UN was arrested last Sunday in New York accused of rape, but

has since been released thanks to his diplomatic immunity

, according to local media.

Charles Dickens Imene Oliha

, 46, after a woman pointed out that he was

responsible for an attack sexual

.

The victim, who lives in the same building in northern Manhattan as the alleged assailant, has explained to the police that Oliha approached her in the lobby,

followed her to her apartment and, once there, raped her twice

before get away.

The woman, after speaking with a friend, decided to report the attack to the Police and received medical attention at a hospital.

The suspect was arrested a few hours later, but after proving his diplomatic immunity, he

was released without being formally charged by the authorities

Stéphane Dujarric stated on Tuesday that the organization is aware of the published information and has indicated that any case of alleged rape or sexual assault "must be thoroughly investigated."

and has confirmed that the UN will continue to monitor the issue.
