For the Mälardalen Rescue Service, the summer has been like previous years and this has resulted in a few calls a month to swimming accidents.

- The places where we received alarms have varied.

It could be that we are alerted to a bathing place, a small water source or in the middle of Mälaren where a boat has been found without a person in it, says Andreas Svensson who is the force leader at the Mälardalen Rescue Service.

The majority of accidents occurred while bathing

A total of 46 people in the country have died in connection with drowning accidents between January and July 2022, according to statistics from the Swedish Lifesaving Society.

The majority of the accidents where a person died have occurred in connection with bathing, and there are 17 of them.

Although the Mälardalen Rescue Service had the same level of cases regarding drowning accidents as in previous years, more people have died in connection with drowning accidents in the county in 2022 compared to the last three years.

"Various reasons such as a heat wave or thin ice can cause more victims," says Andreas Svensson at the Mälardalen Rescue Service.
