Last Saturday, a large national celebration was planned with a huge and lavish fireworks display in the capital, Budapest.

Around 40,000 fireworks were to be launched from 240 locations along the Danube River.

But according to the weather forecast, there was a big risk that there would be a severe thunderstorm and the fireworks were cancelled, writes the BBC.

However, the storm changed direction and instead moved over the eastern parts of the country.

The weather service apologized Sunday, explaining that uncertainty is part of weather forecasting.

But the apology wasn't enough.

On Monday, the managers were fired by the responsible minister László Palkovics.

The fireworks are now scheduled to be held on Saturday.

Encounters strong opposition

Nearly 100,000 Hungarians had signed a petition calling for the fireworks to be canceled due to the ongoing war in neighboring Ukraine and austerity at home.

However, government supporters were furious at the supposed ineptitude of the forecasters and hope the show will now go ahead as planned this coming weekend.
