It was during a hike in the Jämtlandsfjällen last year that a tourist pitched his tent near a trail.

He lifted a stone and then found a strange metal object.

Only this year did the find come to the attention of the county museum, and when chief archaeologist Anders Hansson saw a picture of it, he was amazed.

- I thought that this is just too good to be true.

It's super quality, it's from the Viking Age and it should probably come from a woman's grave up on the mountain.

Which is very unusual.

And the first time here in Jämtland.

More finds

During Thursday, staff from the county museum flew up to the secret find site on the mountain to do an initial archaeological survey and it didn't take long before another bronze buckle had been found.

- Just a few centimeters below a layer of peat, we found the buckle among burned remains of bones, Anders Hansson says.

Plans are now being made for a larger investigation next summer because the find is so unique.
