Two dead in collision of two small planes at California airport

Two small planes collided with each other before landing at a local airport in the US state of California, in an accident that resulted in "dead" deaths, the number of which was not immediately clear, according to the authorities.

The US Civil Aviation Administration said that the collision occurred between a twin-engine Cessna 340 with two people on board, and a single-engine Cessna 152 with only the pilot on board.

"The two planes collided with each other while the two pilots were on the final landing stage at Watsonville Municipal Airport," the small facility located about 120 kilometers south of San Francisco, it added in a statement carried by Agence France-Presse.

For its part, the Watsonville city administration said that the accident resulted in "dead people", without specifying their number or providing further details.

However, the Civil Aviation Administration statement confirmed that the accident did not cause any casualties on the ground, which means that the maximum number of victims is three.

The US Transportation Safety Agency has opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the accident.
