“Six people lost their lives, including two children,” Foix prosecutors told AFP.

Two other people are in absolute emergency and two in relative emergency, said the prefecture of Ariège.

One of the vehicles is registered in France, in Deux-Sèvres, and the other in Spain, said during a press briefing the chief of staff of the prefect, Guillaume Afonso.

All four passengers in the car with the children died.

"An investigation for manslaughter is open" and the Foix research brigade was seized, said Amélie Robin, deputy prosecutor at the Foix prosecutor's office.

"All investigations are underway to understand how this tragedy could have happened, determine the precise circumstances of the accident" and identify the victims, she added to the press.

The frontal impact took place at Savignac-les-Ormeaux, near Ax-les-Thermes and the RN20 was cut in both directions for several hours.

The injured in absolute emergency were airlifted to the Purpan hospital in Toulouse.
