The first court hearings on the case of the Jewish Agency "Sukhnot", which is facing accusations that could lead to its ban in Russia, kicked off Friday in Moscow.

Local media indicated that the agency was collecting information about Russian citizens illegally.

The Russian Ministry of Justice had filed a lawsuit against the agency concerned with immigration issues to Israel, demanding the liquidation of its work on charges of violating Russian laws.

Late last month, the Basmani court in Moscow held a first hearing in the case, which the Israel Broadcasting Corporation described as preliminary.

The Kremlin had called earlier not to politicize the issue against the backdrop of Moscow's criticism of Tel Aviv's position regarding the Russian military operation in Ukraine.

In June, the Russian Ministry of Justice conducted checks and audits of the agency's documents.

There have been a number of contacts recently between Israeli and Russian officials in attempts to settle this issue, the last of which was the phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Israeli counterpart, Isaac Herzog, which took place 10 days ago, during which the two presidents discussed the problems faced by Sokhnot Agency in Russia.
