Bigham, 31, erased from the tablets Belgian Victor Campenaerts, who had traveled 55.089 km in Aguascalientes, Mexico on April 16, 2019.

"I felt very good, I've never been so good on the pace during an hour record. In the first half hour, I was ahead of my forecast, but I felt good. I I had fun, what just happened is quite breathtaking" said Bigham in a press release from Ineos Grenadiers, the team where he has served as a performance engineer since the start of 2021.

"We focused on the basics, being compact, breathing well and having a good head position. I knew that if I could control these three aspects, then the rest would naturally fall into place: then you just have to press the pedals as hard as possible,” he added.

Bigham had already broken the British hour record at the same velodrome in 2021, covering 54.723 km to clear Bradley Wiggins, winner of the 2012 Tour de France.
