Russia: We will only use nuclear weapons in emergency situations

The Russian Foreign Ministry announced today, Thursday, that Moscow will use its nuclear arsenal only in emergency situations, and that it has no interest in a direct confrontation with NATO and the United States.

"Nuclear weapons will only be used as a response measure," Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ivan Nechaev told a news briefing.

"Moscow does not need to use nuclear weapons during its military campaign in Ukraine," Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said yesterday, describing media speculation that Moscow might deploy nuclear or chemical weapons in the conflict as "pure lies."
