Russia: The proposal to disarm the vicinity of the nuclear plant is unacceptable

Russia's Foreign Ministry on Thursday rejected a proposal by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to demilitarize the area around the Russian-controlled Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, saying it would make the facility "more vulnerable".

Concerns have risen in the past few weeks about the plant's safety and the risks of a potential Fukushima-style nuclear accident, after Ukraine and Russia accused each other of bombing it.

Guterres, who is currently visiting Ukraine, called this month for the withdrawal of military personnel and equipment from the nuclear power plant and the establishment of a safe perimeter for disarmament.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ivan Nachayev said in a press briefing today, Thursday, that the proposal is unacceptable to Moscow, and accused Kyiv of practicing what he described as "provocations" and its inability to control nationalist armed groups.
