Israeli forces have killed a Palestinian youth and injured at least 30 other Palestinians during clashes in the West Bank city of Nablus, rescuers said.

Three of them are in critical condition after serious gunshot wounds, the Palestinian Red Crescent said on Thursday.

No Israeli casualties were reported.

Eyewitnesses said the clashes broke out as Israeli forces arrived to protect Jewish worshipers visiting Joseph's Tomb - a site that has become a focal point.

According to Israeli media, armed Palestinians exchanged gunfire with Israeli soldiers near the site.

The Israeli military told Reuters it was investigating the incident.

About a week ago, violence flared up again in the Gaza Strip.

Israel bombed Palestinian targets, while Islamist militants fired hundreds of rockets at Israel in return.
