Guterres: Damage to the Zaporizhia nuclear plant would be 'suicide'

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned Thursday that any damage to the Zaporizhia nuclear plant in Ukraine would be "suicide", as Kyiv and Moscow accuse each other of bombing the site.

“We have to say it as it is: any possible damage to Zaporizhia would be tantamount to suicide,” Guterres said during a visit to Lviv in western Ukraine, again calling for the Russian military-controlled station to be made a demilitarized zone.

Expressing his "grave concern" about the situation at the largest nuclear plant in Europe, he demanded that it not be used in any military operation whatsoever.

Guterres added: "There must be an urgent agreement to return Zaporizhia only to a civilian facility and to ensure the security of the region."
