The danger is real, the words of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution are clear: A radicalized minority of right-wing extremists, delegitimizers and conspiracy believers of all stripes are trying to exploit the economic burdens on German citizens as a result of the Russian attack on Ukraine and thus stir up society.

But that also includes citizens who can be stirred up.

It doesn't look like that at the moment - thank God.

The warnings of riots, such as those issued by Foreign Minister Baerbock, come across as self-destructive prophecies at best.

Society is not divided

It was to be expected that problems within Germany could overshadow the acute suffering of the war in the Ukraine.

The social issues have been back for a few years, they probably never really went away: housing, wage policy, climate protection, health care.

For extremists, these issues can be connected to mainstream society, that is their strategy.

But that also means that the middle of society has long been large and mostly reasonable.

As often as society has been declared divided, it should have been in tatters long ago.

That is not the case, not even after the difficult Corona years.

You should trust that.

Without downplaying the looming dangers that the current unprecedented situation entails.
