• Fifth Anniversary of the pro-independence boycott of the victims of 17-A: boos and shouts to find out 'the truth' break the minute of silence

  • Politics Criticism of the protests during the minute of silence in memory of the victims of 17-A: "It's miserable"

The silence lasted a few seconds.

Those just before it was broken by some thirty independentists who attended the event with banners demanding to know "the truth" about the jihadist attack on

La Rambla

and

Cambrils

in 2017 and that to the cry of "sons of the great bitch", "Spain is a state of murderers" or "we want to know the truth hypocrites" boycotted the tribute to the victims of the attack.

Nor did they respect the relatives and some of the wounded who ended up fighting and seeing how they were called "fascists", "donkeys" or "they will kill you and you will still lick the ass of the murderers".

But the political infamy went beyond the lack of respect for the relatives of the victims.

After finishing the institutional act of the fifth anniversary of the attack, the former president of the Parliament,

Laura Borràs,

went to greet the radical independentists who had boycotted it with her shouts.

Borràs, who was recently removed from the front of the Parliament since she is being prosecuted for corruption, came to greet the radicals who have received her with an ovation and shouts of "president, president", while encouraging her to "break the Government" with CKD.

Precisely the Republicans were the most critical of the attitude of the former president of Parliament.

Her spokesperson in Congress,

Gabriel Rufián

, assured that “not respecting a minute of silence in memory of the victims of an attack is miserable.

And get political profit from it, despicable ».

However, from Borràs's own party, her gesture was also disfigured.

JxCat expressed its "strongest rejection" of the interruption of the minute of silence in the act of homage to the victims of the attacks and the former secretary general of the formation,

Jordi Sànchez

, veiledly alluded to it without citing it when saying: "It was not the place neither to break the minute of silence nor the moment to seek political leadership.

Sorry.".

However, the one who again encouraged the conspiracy theory to obtain political profit was the former president of the Generalitat

Carles Puigdemont

who from Belgium assured that the best tribute that can be paid to the victims of the terrorist attacks of 17-A in Barcelona and Cambrils is "knowing the whole truth."

“It is neither fair nor humane to deny victims the right to know.

And it is the best way to clarify doubts and responsibilities", highlighted the former president who assured that the reaction of Catalan society and administrations to the attack was exemplary, "worthy of a nation that fights for freedom".

For her part, the mayor of Barcelona,

Ada Colau

, lamented the boycott as she considered it a "profound lack of respect" that "something as sacred as the minute of silence for mourning" had not been respected.

Colau recalled that “some victims came from far away, from Holland, Germany, Australia, to participate in this act of memory and mourning.

They did not deserve that there was a small group that wanted to launch their political messages.

In addition, she added that "these families did not deserve a single noise or a single cry to interrupt this minute of silence" and assured that some victims "were" very upset "since the protests were an" act of opportunism ".

Without referring to Borràs, the mayor stated that "if there have been institutional officials who have come out to endorse this act of boycott, they portray themselves and do not represent the majority of this city."

“It is one thing to denounce negligence and insufficiencies in the care of the victims, and another to boycott an act of mourning and memory in which a minute of silence is observed for the victims.

That is not justified.

Wanting to use that in a partisan way already seems to me the height of shame », she concluded.

The adviser of the Unit for Attention and Assessment of People Affected by Terrorism,

Robert Manrique

, lamented the boycott of the sovereigntist groups since he considers that this act should not be used to do politics.

He assured that many victims and their relatives have been "affected" and have done "a lot of damage" that "not even a minute of silence was respected."

«I would pray that, regardless of the ideas of each one, since everyone can think what they want, next time, if we do another act, they keep in mind and think about the victims and not about launching political messages.

You can say what you want but there are times and times," said Manrique.

The institutional act of the fifth anniversary for the 16 deaths and hundreds of injuries on August 17, 2017 in the terrorist attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils was marked by these cries of radicals breaking the minute of silence with proclamations such as «we want the truth», « shame", "you fascists are the terrorists" or "murderers".

As usual, a floral offering was made with white carnations in front of the Miró mosaic on Las Ramblas, the place where the van stopped after running over hundreds of people.

The loudest boos went to the institutional representatives, led by the president of the Generalitat,

Pere Aragonès,

the president of Congress,

Meritxell Batet

, the ministers

Miquel Iceta

and

Raquel Sánchez

, and the mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, who attended along with other positions of the Government and the Barcelona City Council, to leave the flowers behind the victims.

The radicals carried banners asking for "explanations" for 17-A and accusing the State of committing "terrorism" with the attacks five years ago.

After the act there were moments of tension when some of the relatives of the victims have confronted the radicals for breaking the minute of silence and received insults.

Some of the victims present at the act have also denounced once again the institutional abandonment and have lamented that for the moment only a third of those affected who have been recognized as such by the judicial sentence of the National High Court have been compensated.

The most radical and conspiratorial separatists also booed representatives of the Generalitat, the Government and the Barcelona City Council present at the event.

They took flowers left by relatives, demanded the independence of Catalonia and came to sing

Els Segadors

.

In addition, they met again hours later, with Borràs also present, at the headquarters of the European Union in Barcelona to demand that Spain be forced to explain the alleged links between the CNI and the Ripoll imam, the mastermind of the jihadist cell that attacked five years ago.

The National High Court said that there is no evidence of this relationship or that the Major of the Mossos d'Esquadra Josep Lluís Trapero praised the actions of the CNI during the attacks.

As every year, the Catalan Association of Victims of Terrorism (ACVOT), Platform 17-A and Politeia also held an event in memory of the victims of terrorist attacks in which they lamented the "politicization" of the event organized by the City Council.

"We only expect respect and recognition from the institutions, but nevertheless we are doomed to oblivion and marginalization," said the president of ACVOT,

José Vargas

.

In statements to this medium about the booing of radicals in the institutional act, Vargas assured that "this is what happens when you politicize the tribute to the victims."

Julian's mother's tears

Julian was seven years old when he died as a result of serious injuries caused by the van driven by Younes Abouyaaqoub on his deadly journey down La Rambla on that fateful August 17, 2017. Five years later, his parents, Jumarie and Andrew, were present yesterday , just like on the first anniversary, in the tribute that was made in the same place where the vehicle stopped and they were among the most affected by the tension and emotion of the moment.

They carried an image of the minor who was with his mother visiting the city when he lost his life.

She was injured in the attack and was hospitalized.

She has not yet recovered from the injuries from the loss of her child.

Mayor Ada Colau explained after the act that she spoke with relatives and they were "upset" by the boycott,

in addition to pointing out that many came from abroad such as Holland, Germany and Australia.

From the UAVAT it is pointed out that they have constant contact through the networks with many of the international victims of the attacks

The controversy weakens the Government

The JxCat ministers took advantage of 17-A to feed the conspiracy theory.

The head of Social Rights, Violant Cervera, assured that "what happened that fateful day has not yet been resolved" and that the victims and relatives deserve to know the truth.

The head of Foreign Action, Victòria Alsina, urged to clarify "the whole truth" about what happened while the head of Justice, Lourdes Ciuró, pointed out that "it is and will be fair to know the whole truth of that barbarism."

In the antipodes of his partners in the Govern ERC he harshly attacked the boycott in the tribute.

The deputy general secretary of the ERC, Marta Vilalta, assured that it was "a lack of respect and incomprehensible empathy" and that "it should make those who have starred in it, accompanied it and applauded it, reflect."

"They came here to kill Catalans"

It was the episode that caused the most outrage and embarrassment.

A relative of one of the victims of the attack confronted one of the independence supporters who boycotted the act, breaking the minute of silence.

He told him that "the murderers have already been tried" and the sovereignist replied: "They came here to kill Catalans."

He did not stop there but said "I am a victim of terrorism because I am Catalan."

The most conspiratorial sovereigntists burst the institutional act although they had already called their own, in which some 300 protesters observed a minute of silence, which they did respect, and shouted "Murderer Spanish State."
