Witnesses and Afghan police said that a huge explosion occurred in a mosque in Kabul during evening prayers, today, Wednesday, and that there were fears of a large number of dead and wounded.

Police said there were several injuries, but did not specify the number of casualties.

An official told Reuters that as many as 35 people may have been injured or killed, and the number could rise further.

Witnesses told Reuters that a powerful explosion was heard in a northern Kabul neighborhood, destroying the windows of nearby buildings.

Ambulances rushed to the scene.

"There was an explosion inside a mosque... The explosion led to casualties, but the numbers are not yet clear," Khaled Zadran, a Kabul police spokesman, told Reuters.
