According to the Prison Service's latest forecast, the authority will need SEK 15.7 billion in 2025. That is twice as much as in 2014, when that figure was SEK 7.8 billion.

- It is quite a sharp increase in funding, but at the same time it reflects a strong expansion of the entire correctional service and our operations as a result of the fact that we have significantly more clients to take care of, says Björn Myrberg, finance and property director at the Correctional Service.

Björn Myrberg also believes that the development of inmates in detention centers and institutions will continue to increase in the future.

- We also assess that it will continue to develop like this in the coming years, says Björn Myrberg.

"Incredible cost driver"

According to Björn Myrberg, the reason why the inmates are increasing is due, among other things, to the government's investments in harsher punishments, such as the abolition of the penalty discount, but also to the investments in the police.

- It is various types of criminal policy reforms, various toughening of penalties and investments in the police that provide that development for us, says Björn Myrberg.

The expansion will be more expensive than the Prison Service previously estimated, and now additional funding is required in three years.

- The increase in capacity that we are planning for is incredibly cost-driving, we have demanded that.

We have judged previous decisions to be sufficient for 2023 and 2024, but we need another 1.1 billion by 2025, says Martin Holmgren, Director General of the Correctional Service.
