The official Syrian News Agency (SANA) reported today, Monday, that 3 soldiers were killed and the same were wounded, in two simultaneous Israeli attacks on Sunday evening, south of Tartous Governorate and the capital, Damascus.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed that the targeted sites in Tartus are about 8 kilometers from the only base of the Russian Navy on the Mediterranean Sea in the port of Tartus.

According to the agency, the Israeli bombardment was with bursts of missiles launched from the Mediterranean, and that the air defenses shot down some Israeli missiles.

Syrian officers told Reuters that the first attack targeted sites run by the pro-Iranian Lebanese group Hezbollah, northeast of the capital, Damascus, while the second attack targeted an Iranian base near the village of Abu Afsa, south of the coastal city, as well as a nearby radar and air defense station.

Pro-regime media websites have broadcast pictures showing a fire truck heading to the targeted place, and the pictures also showed what they said were missiles in the skies of Lebanon heading towards Syria.

Israel has launched hundreds of strikes against what are believed to be Iranian targets in recent years, but has mostly avoided bombing coastal provinces where Russia's main military bases are concentrated.

Israeli and regional military experts say the aim of these strikes is to curb Iran's growing entrenchment in Syria.

Russia's intervention on the side of Iran helped turn the tide of the war in favor of President Bashar al-Assad in a conflict that has been going on for more than a decade.

The coastal areas are mainly inhabited by the Alawite minority, to which Assad belongs, and dominates the top positions in the security forces and the army.

Russian forces in Syria are turning a blind eye to Israeli air strikes against deployments and arms transfers believed to be sponsored by Iran.
