With just over 7 million votes, the outgoing vice-president beat his opponent Raila Odinga, who only won 48.85% of the votes.

Expected results rejected by a majority of the Electoral Commission, including its vice-president, Juliana Cherera, who says she cannot "

assume responsibility for the results which will be announced

 " because of the "

 opaque nature of the process

", while calling Kenyans to "

calm

".

Among the

main campaign promises of William Ruto

: to lower the cost of food in the face of galloping inflation.

Another promise of the former vice-president: to make employment, especially young people, a priority: "

We will develop our textile industry, copper, wood, to create enough job opportunities

", he had declared earlier this month in Nyeri.
