He pointed out that river sand is the main material for construction, and importing it from mainland China to Taiwan is the most convenient and economical option for Taiwan.

At the same time, Chao stressed that the ban on the export of river sand had almost no effect on the semiconductor industry, since river sand is not a raw material for highly crystalline silicon, which is used in the production of semiconductor wafers and chips.

“The main importer of raw materials for the semiconductor industry in Taiwan is Japan, so the impact of the ban on the export of river sand on the semiconductor industry can be ignored,” he told RIA Novosti.

On August 3, the Ministry of Commerce of China announced the cessation of supplies of natural sand to Taiwan.
