France 24 followed a medical team from the Red Crescent, which goes to villages in Afghanistan where no health structure exists.

The villagers are only visited by these doctors every two months and most of them cannot afford to go to town to consult.

On site, doctors – mostly men – are restricted by local traditions and cannot examine patients.

"Maternal mortality is high because they don't have access to health facilities and because men don't allow their wives to go to a male doctor," said a nurse from the Afghan Red Crescent.

Added to this is a funding problem for these small hospitals, which receive little or no aid from abroad, including in structures that treat malnourished children, of whom there are an increasing number.

Some doctors continue to work without pay.
