“It has been repeatedly stated”: the US Foreign Ministry pointed out the consequences of a possible recognition of Russia as a “sponsor of terrorism”

If the United States puts Russia on the list of “countries sponsoring terrorism,” relations between Moscow and Washington can be forgotten.

This was stated by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova.

“We talked about this - and not only verbally, we also posted comments in writing and even translated into English.

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry warned that the declaration of Russia as a sponsor of terrorism would become a “point of no return”, which could lead to “the most serious collateral damage for bilateral diplomatic relations, up to a decrease in their level and even a rupture.”

I would not like to go into hypothetical discussions about what is possible and what is not in the current turbulent situation, when the Westerners, led by the United States, have trampled on international law and absolute taboos in diplomatic practice,” Alexander Darchiev, director of the North America Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, told TASS.

On July 27, the US Senate passed a resolution calling on the State Department to recognize Russia as a “country sponsor of terrorism.”

The Congress explained that such a decision was made in connection with the actions of Russia in Chechnya, Georgia, Syria and Ukraine.

If the state is recognized as a "sponsor of terrorism", this will mean that the United States may impose restrictive measures against it.

Among them are a ban on the export and sale of defense sector goods, control over the export of dual-use products, financial and other restrictions.

In addition, the United States can impose sanctions against other states that maintain trade relations with a country recognized as a sponsor of terrorism.

According to Zakharova, the United States is "pursuing the idea" of recognizing Russia as a "sponsor of terrorism" through someone else's hands.

“As a matter of fact, the Baltic countries have already spoken on this subject,” the diplomat noted.

Kyiv also insists on recognizing Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism.

According to Andriy Yermak, head of the office of the President of the country, thanks to this, Ukraine will supposedly be able to defeat Russia.

According to Volodymyr Zelensky, Western countries need to follow the example of Latvia in this matter.

“A decision has been made in Latvia.

Latvia has officially recognized Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism.

We are working to ensure that the whole world does the same.

And it will be,” Zelensky said.

On August 11, the Latvian Seimas adopted a statement in which Russia is recognized as a “state that supports terrorism”, and actions in Ukraine are recognized as “terrorism”.

67 deputies voted in favor, 16 abstained.

The Seimas also called on the EU countries to immediately suspend the issuance of visas to citizens of Russia and Belarus.

As Maria Zakharova stated, the parliamentarians who adopted the document should be called neo-Nazis.

“Given that there is no texture other than animal xenophobia under this decision, it is necessary to call ideologues nothing more than neo-Nazis,” the diplomat wrote in her Telegram channel.

The Russian Foreign Ministry called the decision of the Seimas "a manifestation of Russophobia, which has long become the "tuning fork" of Latvian foreign policy."

“This step of the highest legislative body of Latvia is in gross contradiction with the current international law and violates the principle of the sovereign equality of states, fixed in paragraph 1 of Art.

2 of the UN Charter," the agency stressed.

Thus not all Latvian deputies agree with the decision of parliament.
