The risk of a catastrophe at the Zaporizhia nuclear plant "increases every day"

The mayor of the city where the Zaporizhia plant is located has warned that the risk of disaster at the nuclear plant under the control of Russian forces "is increasing every day".

Russian forces have taken control of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, since the early days of the invasion of Ukraine.

The facility was bombed several times this week, while Kyiv and Moscow accused each other of escalation.

"What is happening there is outright nuclear terrorism and it may end unpredictably at any moment ... the danger is increasing every day," the mayor of Energodar, where the station is located, told AFP.

Kyiv accused Moscow of deploying troops and weapons at the station, launching attacks and using the atomic station as a shield to prevent Ukrainian soldiers from responding.

"The situation is serious and what is most worrying is the lack of any de-escalation process," Orlov said.
