According to Wiener, backlit displays, which are used in many European retail outlets, are one of the main factors affecting nighttime energy consumption in urban areas.

Another problem, according to the parliamentarian, is that many stores “keep their doors open when the air conditioning or heating is on,” which reduces energy efficiency.

“There are grounds for introducing a key energy conservation measure here that will play a vital role in times of power shortages that we may face as a result of the current state of affairs,” Wiener said.

She recalled that, for example, in France there is already a ban on illuminated advertising from 01:00 to 06:00, although this measure does not apply to airports and railway stations.

“Will the European Commission, in order to save energy, consider imposing similar restrictions on the use of advertising displays at the EU level?”

the parliamentarian asked, proposing to evaluate the option of adopting similar restrictions regarding the use of air conditioners.

Earlier, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Austria, Karin Kneissl, in an interview with Asia Times, said that Europe is waiting for the decline due to ignorance.
